The Santa Clara Island, situated in the heart of the La Concha bay, is one of the most visited tourist centers in Saint Sebastian. In it we can find many spots to relax surrounded by nature just 600 meters away from the city center.
The continuous oceanic activities, formed a big bay where Urgull and Santa Clara existed. The natural acummulation of sand after the first mentioned, and it's posterior urbanization, left Santa Clara as the one and only island in the middle of the bay.
It's known that there was an hermitage in the XIV century dedicated to Saint Clara (where it takes its name from) and that, in 1597, year in which Saint Sebastian was struck by the plague, it was home to the people who were affected by it. Nowadays, the only building we can find there is the lighthouse, that was active for more than 100 years and it was automated in the 60s.
The island counts with a small beach where you can relax, a pool formed by nature that you can enjoy when the tides are high, hiking trails, places to rest and incredible sights of the city. When the island is open to the public (summer time), it has lifeguards, transport by boat and a small bar where you can enjoy fresh drinks while spending a great time there.
Saint Clara Island is only some minutes away from the La Concha beach by boat, which makes it a very easy go to place for any tourist spending their vacation in Saint Sebastian. In summer, the boats that depart from the port offer regularly timed trips to the island, letting everyone enjoy a short but beautiful trip to the island in which you'll be able to perfectly see the whole bay.
The Santa Clara Island is with no doubt, a place that combines history, nature and leisure, offering residents and travelers a unique experience in the heart of Saint Sebastian.
